The Village Tutors program is an after-school literacy program for all neighborhood children. Each student is assigned one 90-minute afterschool session per week with the same tutor throughout the school year. By combining volunteer tutors/mentors with lesson plans and academic goals developed by licensed teachers, Village Tutors works to address both the social and educational needs of our students.
The purpose of the Village Tutors program is to improve the academic achievement of our students by increasing specific literacy skills. We aim to foster an environment where reading and learning will become part of the student’s cultural memory, and can thus be shared with his/her family.
Students who participated in Village Tutors improved by an average of two reading levels in 2010-2011!
Village Tutors provides training throughout the year so that volunteers may develop skills as a tutor as well as insure that the students receive quality literacy instruction. Training consists of learning strategies that enhance reading comprehension, phonics, and vocabulary.
All sessions are located at Park Avenue United Methodist Church, 3400 Park Avenue, Minneapolis. Tutoring appointments are made Monday-Thursday between 2-8 p.m.
